2020 will see the release of a new trilogy of dance films, funded by Dance Hub and The D’Oyly Carte Charitable Trust. The films collaborate with two experienced deafblind dancers - Caroline Sapsed and Joe Coffin and explores the relationship between body, space and connection, with leading non-disabled dancers from interACTION. Suspended Motion  is about exploring the representation of dancers with complex disabilities and pilots new forms of access using audio description, subtitling and vibrations (using SubPac technology). We aim to submit the film into screen dance festivals and galleries, across the UK and internationally, throughout 2020. Read our blog about the project https://blog.sense.org.uk/2020/01/suspend-motion-an-immersive-performance-experience/

Flatpack 2020 Screen Dance Short Film Competition

Birmingham's eclectic film bonanza launches an exclusive online shorts programme

Like many other events, Flatpack Festival were last month forced to cancel their fourteenth edition scheduled for May. However, their acclaimed and BAFTA-qualifying short film competition will be going ahead online. For the first time this year, Flatpack presents a dance film competition programme. We received films from across the globe and have co-curated a selection that reflects the inventiveness and diversity of the of the art form with narratives that explore the body, how cities unite, motherhood, an obsession with data and a bit of housekeeping thrown in, and off course that’s all told through the medium of dance on film.

The programme will run on-line as part of Flatpack 2020: Home Entertainment Edition from the 8th til the 17th May. The competition will be judged by regional artists Karen Wood and Ravi Deepres and the winner will be announced during an awards night 15th May. Check out the trailer to see outstanding films that push the genre in many directions both technically, cinematically and choreographically.

Flatpack Screendance Festival 4 Star review – dance that leaps through the screen

The rise of social media and a new generation of digital-native choreographers are slowly changing that, but it’s just possible that this period when theatres are dark will push screendance further into the foreground. Flatpack has ‘an eclectic bunch of offerings, from the reflections of a hip-hop dancer in physical rehab to a dancing maid with murder on her mind; there’s no shortage of original ideas’. You can read the 4 Star review here; https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2020/may/12/flatpack-screendance-festival-review-dance-that-leaps-through-the-screen?CMP=share_btn_tw

Echo Eternal Artist Residency and Film Commission

Echo Eternal is a commemorative arts, media and engagement project delivered in schools for children of all ages, inspired by the testimony of British survivors of the Holocaust. The testimony was captured in interviews with Natasha Kaplinksy for the UK Holocaust Memorial Fund.

I was invited to deliver an artist residency and directed two film responses in collaboration with River Rea Film. “Weaving Portraits” “L’dor Va’dor (Generation to Generation)”captured pupils civic responses from two survivors stories. The films will be exhibited in the National Memorial Education centre in 2021.

I am delighted to receive the second round of Dance Hub’s “Artistic Practice Bursary” enabling me to research innovation collaborations across dance and science to support the creation of a new dance film “Choreography of the Cosmos”.

Choreography of the Cosmos is a dance film in it’s the early stages of development and is inspired by connections between the spiritual teachings of Hinduism and western philosophies of the cosmos. This piece will explore the mythology and physics behind the formations of Guajarati Indian folk dance and how the movement is scientifically linked to the cosmos.
