The Offering, 2015
Sima’s directorial debut The Offering is a biography film that explores South Asian cultural traditions and how these reveal a sense of belonging and detachment; reflecting on how the family structure can break down through loss. It is a self-portrait of growing up within a South Asian cultural and religious framework where loss and separation from mother to daughter breaks down the family structure.
This event, experienced as a young dancer, spearheaded a shift to growing independence. Coping with this loss, she blended Western and Indian culture to live without her mother’s presence. This experience was pivotal, and the genesis of her filmmaking /storytelling career.
