Freefall Trilogy (2012 – 2014 – 2018)
This trilogy marks the start of Sima Gonsai’s journey to redress the balance by profiling underrepresented artists and making dance inclusive for everyone. They are a unique collaboration between Birmingham Royal Ballet and Freefall (a sister dance organisation), exploring contemporary ballet through screen dance.
The films have inclusion, accessibility and equality at their core.
Freefall
The first film captures the group’s ballet dynamic, where ability is presented equally, and focuses on each dancer’s aesthetic. Commissioned by Mencap, Freefall is a dance film featuring Freefall Dance Company and created for 2012 Olympic Games reaching 1.2 million viewers, with an international premier at San Francisco Dance Film Festival.
One Fine Day
The second film, One Fine Day, explores a day in a life of Freefall, presented through the locations that each dancer visits and enjoys. Travel through an imagined world in a short dance film presenting a collection of rhythmic and witty scenarios capturing the adventurous world of Freefall Dance Company.
We are Here
The third film is a collaboration between BRB principal dancers and Freefall. The films also enabled the company to tour their work digitally and be viewed by an international audience and placed on an equal platform to other dance artists. An award winning dance film that connects and contrasts two contemporary forms of ballet performed by Freefall Dance Company and Birmingham Royal Ballet principle dancers.
